Announcing ABC TOP 5 Arts 2022 Media Residencies
Based at Sydney College of the Arts, Dr. Mestrom’s sculptural practice engages with ‘the female body’ in various cultural contexts: philosophical, autobiographical, as well as in the context of art historical and political concerns.
Her research examines conflicting assumptions, expectations and perceptions of motherhood in cultural, artistic, academic and institutional contexts. “Feminist motherhood is a surprisingly underexplored topic. Feminism and motherhood continue to be viewed as incompatible, acutely in the context of contemporary art,” Dr. Mestrom said.
“I will be using my time at the ABC to develop skills to create a six-part podcast about the decisions all women face when it comes to motherhood and how choosing to be a mother will impact their career,” said Dr. Mestrom. “It will have a particular focus on women working in the arts and the choices they make around motherhood and creativity, parenthood and independence, and economics and art. “
Dr. Mestrom hopes to bring the voices of other academic women and artists to the podcast. She is looking to interview women in the arts who have or have not chosen motherhood and scholars who might have ideas for research on feminist motherhood, or what she describes as the tension between motherhood and otherness. in the academic and creative professions.
