Two of Perth’s most exciting artists are collaborating on a unique new project, combining creative styles to tell the story of a killer spiritual assassin.

The Red color is the brainchild of musician, performer and writer Moana Mayatrix and artist and designer Lucas Bowers, bringing together music, visual arts, animation and fashion.

The work, led by Moana’s epic ballad of the same name, explores the archetypes of a woman’s journey from naïve princess to wounded woman, ultimately emerging as an indomitable warrior.

In tandem with Moana’s words and music, The Red color is illustrated by Bowers, designed to be experienced in an intimate, bespoke enclosure created inside PSAS for an immersive viewing experience.

Surrounded by a selection of illustrated printed works and a unique collection of The Red color inspired garments created by Moana and Lucas, this is a true storytelling work of art that explores the landscape of possibilities of what constitutes storytelling.

“The Red color is an adventurous creative take on all things red – passion, love, lust, blood, fury, told through the prism of the wild feminine in a long story-song that I wrote over several years said Moana.

“This is very important work for me, and I am very happy to host my first multidisciplinary exhibition which involves the full spectrum of my creativity. Sharing this alongside an acclaimed artist like Lucas, with our shared passion for creating conceptual and immersive worlds, is a dream come true.

Lucas adds that the work is the cumulative expression of years of art and design practice.

“From comics to music, from clothing to film, from new technology to traditional media, all built around a beautifully symbolic narrative that is very close to my heart,” says Lucas.

“A passionate work, full of teeth, of a dark beauty, to collaborate on a project like The Red color with an artist who inspires me and whom I respect as much as Moana Mayatrix, has been a thrilling adventure in creative expression that I have enjoyed more than anything I have done in a long time.

The duo are also celebrating the launch of the exhibition with a special live performance alongside some very talented friends. PS Art Space will be drenched in red, hosting the high-fashion burlesque style of Essie Foxglove and the sounds of elemental drone duo Filth Goddess, along with a selection of old and new songs from Moana and the WAM-nominated band.

The Color Red exhibition runs from Sunday July 10 to Wednesday July 13 from 5pm to 9pm, at PS Art Space, 22 Pakenham St, Fremantle.

The special live performance event takes over on Saturday July 9 from 7 p.m. For tickets and more information, go to Humanitix.
